Objectives

"Colorful Lives' ' was a project created from the desire of the association Mol'Youth to raise awareness in society and the surrounding environment for the defence of the rights of LGBTI+ communities. The aim of the promoting association is to create a fairer society where there is no kind of discrimination towards the different communities in the country and all over Europe. It should be noted that the acronym LGBTI+ refers to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transvestite, transsexual, transgender, intersex and other identities covered by the symbol +. According to the report "Society at a Glance 2019", Portugal is one of the eight European OECD countries to record the highest number of reports of discriminatory acts by the homosexual community. According to the latest statistical data, Austria, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Poland and Slovenia are also on that list, underlining the fact that one in three people from the LGBTI+ community in Europe feel discriminated against due to sexual orientation and gender identity. However, more recent data from the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights, and published in the newspaper Público, reveal that Portugal is quite tolerant towards the LGBTI+ community in general, being "the country with fewer attacks motivated by sexual orientation or gender identity". Furthermore, according to the 2019 "Spartacus International Gay Guide Index" website, Portugal was also considered the most "gay friendly" destination in the world, along with Sweden and Canada. Despite many countries showing empathy and solidarity with this reality, there is still a long way to go, since numerous studies indicate the prevalence of incidents/acts of discrimination that require urgent changes in society. It should be noted that discriminatory acts mean any homophobic and/or transphobic insult, destruction of property (mobile phones, cars, graffiti at home or in the workplace), physical aggression, etc. In this sense, the "Colorful Lives" project aimed to mitigate the existing discrimination and help the consortium countries to adopt a new vision about these communities. The main objective of this project was to help young people, youth workers and youth leaders by providing them with essential information on LGBTI+ issues, social inclusion and intercultural differences. This allowed them to promote the implementation of measures of excellence in their local organizations, fostering an environment of full inclusion and equality. To this end, we aimed for participants to acquire, throughout the exchange, the following tools: - basic understanding of terms used and related to LGBTI+ issues; - ability to address LGBTI+ issues confidently and fearlessly - general knowledge of the reality of these communities, such as the different dimensions of the concepts of gender, sex and sexuality; - more awareness about their own gender, sex and sexuality, being able to think about these issues on an individual basis; - confidence to pass on the knowledge gained in the youth exchange at a later stage; - motivation and ability to actively use the acquired information in their routines and work; - use of best practices for effective inclusion in partner organisations' events, especially in relation to the concepts of gender, sex and sexuality; - knowledge of various methods and tools through which they can create synergies with LGBTI+ communities at local level. It should be noted that the objectives of this project were framed with the themes that the consortium intends to carry out and with the guidelines of the Erasmus+ National Agency, where the main purpose is the creation of a fairer society, promoting diversity, intercultural dialogue, tolerance and respect for human rights. Therefore, with this project it was intended to improve the skills level of young people, promote intercultural dialogue and social inclusion and strengthen the international dimension of youth sector activities, increasing the capacity of organizations in supporting young people, together with the external action of the European Union. The promoting organization, entitled Mol'Youth, is an association from the district of Aveiro whose purpose is the defence of human rights as a way to create a more egalitarian society. The partners of this project were associations from Spain, Lithuania, Romania, Poland and Italy who work for the promotion of social integration, respect and tolerance among all. In short, the "Colorful Lives' ' project aimed to provide young people, especially those whose economic and social possibilities are lower, with opportunities to contact with different intercultural realities, getting to know in more detail the needs and concerns of LGBTI+ communities.
