Objectives

In the current European reality the development of territory and the exploration of business opportunities and job creation in the islands is strongly connected with the entrepreneurial activities of the active and social agents of the region as well as the institutional network of support to entrepreneurship in these territories. This reality is something experienced in the intervention area of Developing Madeira. In this way, considering a perspective of development of the islands in a sustainable and cohesive way, giving opportunities of equality between the population of the islands and the people of Continental Europe, it is important to dynamize a network and entrepreneurial environment as a decisive contribution to combat the lack of development and population abandonment of the islands. The project "The Islands Power" emerged based on the belief described above and also as a response to the European problem of lack of opportunities in European islands, a reality that most of the European population is unaware of. Thus the project followed the following objectives: to demonstrate the advantages of using tourism as an entrepreneurial solution to combat unemployment, to provide tools to young Europeans who aim to be entrepreneurs on islands, to show, through non-formal education, what are the advantages of having an entrepreneurial spirit and how to develop opportunities and support networks for entrepreneurship on islands. The Islands Power project took place in Funchal on the island of Madeira, an area characterised by a lack of innovative and entrepreneurial opportunities for the general population and for the younger generations who resort to moving to the coastal cities of Portugal as an easier way to succeed. The aim of the project was to combat these "easy" solutions and to provide and demonstrate to young people on European islands the possibilities and chances that exist for the development of entrepreneurial projects on the islands. The municipality that hosted the project "The Islands Power" is characterized by a strand related to the Tourism of Sun and Sea and Events, two of the ten products selected for the growth and potential of tourism supply related to entrepreneurship according to the PENT, National Strategic Plan of Tourism, a plan drawn up by the Tourism of Portugal for the year 2020. However, this area is currently underdeveloped in relation to all the existing potential and related to the other products of the PENT, reason why the project focused on the development of opportunities and ideas existing at European level for islands. The high unemployment rate existing in the European youth generation was one of the main concerns in the development of this project. In this way, the project emerged in the sense of creating and stimulating goal-oriented youth, propitious elements for the inversion of the unfavourable trend, which allow the endowment of adequate and precise competences and skills for preparing the European youth generation for the labour market and entrepreneurship, objectives in communion with the European development principles such as the Erasmus+ programme. With the development of the project it was intended, in accordance with the main objectives of the project, to endow the participants with an enriching experience, at various levels such as the endowment of leadership skills, such as the encouragement of initiative and communication, as well as the development of personal, social and interpersonal skills, through which they were able to develop entrepreneurial skills. The aim was also to highlight the value of cultural enrichment and diversity and thus promote integration activities and interaction between different cultures. Through this experience, participants had the opportunity to become more aware of the numerous existing employment and entrepreneurship opportunities, as well as being able to have a broader vision regarding employability and career prospects. In communion with the programme objectives and the priorities of the Erasmus+ National Agency, "The Islands Power" project has thus promoted the improvement of the level of key competences and skills of young Europeans, promoted improvements in the quality of youth work, namely through a reinforced cooperation between organisations, developed competences considering personal enhancement and active insertion in the labour market, supported the development of youth support systems through the valorisation of professional resources intervening in the youth field and promoted the complementarity of formal and non-formal education, vocational training, employment and entrepreneurship. In communion with the programme objectives and the priorities of the Erasmus+ National Agency, "The Islands Power" project thus promoted: Improving the level of key competences and skills of young Europeans; Promote improvements in the quality of youth work, including through enhanced cooperation between organisations; Support the development of knowledge and knowledge-based youth policy and recognition of non-formal and informal learning, notably through enhanced cooperation, better use of Union transparency and recognition tools and the dissemination of good practice; To increase the international dimension of youth activities and the role of European youth workers and organisations; Develop skills considering personal development and active insertion in the labour market Support the development of support systems for young people by enhancing professional resources in the youth field To promote the recognition of competences obtained; Promote the complementarity of formal and non-formal education, vocational training, employment and entrepreneurship.
