Objectives

Through the implementation of this project, we wanted to explore thoroughly the issue of how the low interest of young people in democratic life could be tackled with the proper support and training of key players in these young people’s lives. Youth are often considered impassive regarding their involvement and responsibility within their community, and the need for implementing this project evolved from our awareness that those with the ability to embrace and accept change are, in fact, young people. Consequently, the implementation of this project was an opportunity to support and empower youth workers, mentors, and coaches whose role is a) to spread awareness and knowledge of the impact youth can have in being present and actively involved in society and b) to motivate, support, engage and empower young people. The project raised awareness and knowledge about active citizenship, the importance of democratic life for young people, and youth participation to enhance understanding of its key concepts. By equipping the key players who were directly working or being involved with young people with new or improved skills, providing them with new tools and methods, and helping them develop themselves not only at a professional but also at a personal level, we managed through our project to empower them and to promote active citizenship among a more significant number of youngsters. The objectives of the project were: • To deepen the participant’s understanding of the critical principles of youth participation and active citizenship. • To provide space for participants from Mediterranean countries to meet and exchange ideas on active citizenship and related issues, e.g., democracy, identity, participation, rights, responsibilities, etc. • To share best practices related to facilitating and developing active citizenship and participation projects (volunteering programmes, youth initiatives, etc.) • To equip participants with skills and knowledge and help them develop the right attitudes necessary when undertaking projects with young people. • To increase the participants’ capacity for critical thinking to empower individuals to take an active role in building a civil society aware of its rights and obligations as imposed by the meaning of citizenship. • To engage participants in preparing and implementing future joint initiatives linked to the project topic. • To create a network and partnership of organizations willing to work together on future projects around citizenship and active youth participation. Within an international learning atmosphere, we approached and discussed different aspects of international voluntary and community projects and activities and their required preparation. We also raised awareness of other issues that can arise or can be directly linked to leading an international and local youth project. Also, we focused on the importance of leadership and cooperation among organizations. Including partner organizations from non-EU countries allowed us to have a broad share of experiences among us, contributed to establishing a robust and reliable partnership with South Mediterranean countries, and offered a wider audience for disseminating project results.
