Objectives

Nowadays, the names of ‘immigrants’ and ‘asylum seekers’ are used as scapegoats. The repercussions are huge: from blatant hate, polarisation that leads to a divided nation that is reticent to integrating immigrants, openly oppose and legitimise public expressions of hatred and even harassment and discrimination towards ethnic minorities. We believe that the European Union is founded on values of respect for one another, including respect for minorities. Pluralism, non-discrimination, tolerance and equality must prevail. We must learn about patience, understanding and compassion through good role-models but also by allowing room for us to have personal experience to change our own views and the world for the better. We have chosen theatre as methodology to address our goal. An artistic and non-formal method to face a sensitive problem. We aimed to develop sensibility and responsibility on the issue of integration, immigrant policies and to defend the rights of minority groups. Verbatim theatre is like journalism. Verbatim theatre brings social issues to the stage by emphasizing factual information over aesthetic considerations. The creator is trying to start a dialogue with the audience by focusing on the psychological and interpersonal aspect of a particular event. It sits at the intersection of art and engagement with the general public and can be seen as a catalyst for social change. It teaches about dissecting monologues and phrases till you reach the truth. It teaches respect of another person’s truth and gives voice to all involved. Because, after all, theatre is a playground. Theatre provides space for creativity. Verbatim Theatre gives voice to people who would not normally have a platform. Therefore we believed verbatim theatre to be the best for our project. The objectives of the project were: -To address our own and our communities prejudices towards immigration. -To promote combat against racism and to reduce the cultural gap between EU and non-EU citizens -To learn about discrimination and how we can have an impact on the attitude of local communities. -To create a play which denounces discrimination. -To understand cultural differences through theatre. Compassion for the reality of the drama refugees are living. -To illustrate the pivotal role of civil society in the integration process. To encourage volunteerism. -To reinforce social cohesion in the targeted communities, empowering individuals and groups at risk of social exclusion by contributing to the development and improvement of their skills, knowledge and competences. -To inspire young people from ethnic minority groups to act not only on stage, but also in their real life. -To increase awareness about the influence of mass media. -To feel empowered. -To learn empathy and understanding through personal experience. -To support self-development.
