Youth unemployment is already an issue that many NGOs try to fight, the job market is volatile and inflated, and youngsters find it hard to find: either a job in their field of work or even a stable job in general. The current job market, as mentioned, is quite volatile and inflated, and that takes some adapting to, and we felt that the importance of soft skills simply isn't taught to youngsters nowadays, and that, simply slows down their development as professionals, leaving them not knowing how to fight this tough job market, as well as leading to several other problems related to their mental health, income, development, etc. We backed these claims by shedding light on relevant statistics, for example, in 2019 there were over 3.3 million young people (aged 15-24 years) unemployed in the EU. At the end of 2020, Portugal alone stood as the 6th ranked country with the highest Youth Unemployment Rate in the EU with 25.6%, a rise of 6% after the pandemic, Greece also one of the partner countries in this exchange stands now in 2nd place with 33.5%, they actually had a decrease in youth unemployment, however still incredibly concerning numbers, and Spain's youth unemployment rate shot up to 40.8% from 32.9%. The effects, that the COVID-19 quarantine had on the economy worldwide, are already starting to show, many companies and businesses have closed, and as a consequence, many youngsters already lost their jobs, and keep losing their chances of getting one. So we looked to start acting, to aid in reversing the economical effects COVID-19 had and will keep having and do our part to contribute to the European Goal of increasing the youth employment rate, in line with the wider EU target of achieving a 75% employment rate. So in Underdog, we looked to provide youngsters with a toolkit of soft skills to aid them not only in getting better jobs and making themselves more desirable to employers, but also to help them in goal achievement in general, be it starting a business, becoming a singer, a sports athlete, learning a new language, and so on. Regarding objectives, youngsters are having a tough time in this subject, so we wish to provide them with the said toolkit of soft skills (including information analysis and critical thinking skills, how to plan a goal, learning to learn, taking initiative, resource management, time management, mindset as well as problem-solving and thinking outside the box skills) all through non-formal and game-based learning tactics. Furthermore, we wanted to do a local campaign in Castelo Novo to share with the local community these skills that our participants have learned throughout the exchange. Regarding the link with the Erasmus+ Program, through this initiative, we attempted to provide youngsters with skills and competences, so they can insert themselves in their labour markets as well as become active citizens in their communities. By participating in the youth exchange, the participants would be in an intercultural and multilingual environment, thus promoting also social inclusion and solidarity as well as a sense of European citizenship. This mobility also was also intended to aid in the strengthening of the links between the youth field and the labour market, as well as have an impact on the community where the project will take place. As such the formal objectives of the project were the following: - Raising awareness on European opportunities that participants can take advantage of, that can be alternatives methods to acquire skill, and work experience, making youngsters more desirable to the Labour Market through participating. - Develop information analysis and critical thinking skills, through game-based learning, strengthening the ability of youngsters to find valuable and trustworthy information online. - Defining and understanding how to plan a goal, as well as its importance. All through, non-formal education sessions, raising awareness on the effects it can have on the process of achieving the desired goal. - Addressing Erasmus+ Key Competences for Lifelong Learning such as: learning to learn, being key to acquiring the necessary skills to achieve a goal. - Debating the importance of sense initiative, and how it can improve participants careers, and personal development, as well as how it indirectly can affect their communities. - Developing time and resource management skills through game-based learning and understanding of how, such can be a defining factor in goal achievement, personal, and professional development. - Describing the value of mindset, problem-solving skills, and thinking outside the box, as valuable tools to personal development and professional success using non-formal methods. - Creating and executing a fair in Castelo Novo to share with local youth the skills that participants have learned throughout the exchange as a way to impact the local community. - Increase the sense of European citizenship and promote active citizenship.
