The main theme of the "LIA - Local Impact Agent" Project was to value and empower new leaders of the interior as active agents capable of being responsible for creating positive impacts on the interior. The pertinence of this theme arose from the need to counteract an increasingly alarming tendency, transversally felt by all the partners of our consortium, the desertification of the interior and the accentuation of asymmetries. The indicators that confirm that the desertification of the interior is a reality are getting bigger and bigger, and the indicators that prove the discrepancy of opportunities, resources and instruments available to the interior populations, in particular young people, are also getting bigger and bigger. It is also important to mention that the interior should be interpreted as the geographic space distant from the urban centres, in population centres, being as a rule more rural and more hostage to dependent and fragile economies. Considering all this and adding the universality of the problem expressed by our partners, we are convinced of the relevance and urgency of the implementation of this project. The project was developed in Portugal, in the region of Viseu, and counted on the participation of 42 young people aged between 18 and 30, from 7 countries: Portugal, Czech Republic, Romania, Italy, Poland, Turkey and Slovakia, during the 2nd to 9th of July 2021. The different dynamics had, as a rule, non-formal education methodologies and sought to have as their main focus the work within the scope of valuing the role of young people in their communities. We set out for this project centred on 3 purposes: 1) Valuing and empowering the role of our young leaders; 2) Enhancing the capacity to intervene in society and in local communities; 3) Enhancing the creation of structured projects capable of generating new opportunities and new stimuli for young people living inland. We also reinforce before our young people and before our community that: 1) There is value in Pesqueira; 2) That Pesqueira and its youth organizations have conditions, capacity and competence to manage and organize valid international events/projects. It is quite relevant as an affirmation of this territorial imbalance to note that it costs more to travel between São João da Pesqueira and Porto than between Porto and London, Madrid, Rome, Paris or Berlin. It is important to reinforce that we intend with the implementation of the project to achieve the following objectives from the perspective of the participants, young people with lack of access to opportunities 1) to participate in a European mobility project; 2) to allow them through this experience to reinforce their skills as leaders - agents of local impact; 3) to assume a more active and participative role in their communities; 4) to be vehicles of dissemination of the project; 5) to affirm their will to be "anchors" and "engines" in the interior; 6) to work on the elaboration of ideas of local initiatives, which they consider important to reinforce the dynamics and offers in the interior. In addition, the 'LIA - Local Impact Agent' project was focused on enhancing the development of competencies in the new leaders of the hinterland: 1) It allowed the development of skills in the participants; 2) Promoted the participation and involvement of young people; 3) Provided young people with concepts and instruments that allowed them to strengthen their role as leaders of communities in the interior; 4) Provided participants with skills that enhance their relationship with the labour market; 5) Strengthened their personal organizational capacity; 6) Raised the awareness of the impact that each one can have in their own local reality; 7) Strengthened the critical sense and civic intervention in an active way 8) It valued the feeling of personal empowerment, bridging the gap with competence tools such as the YouthPass and the Curriculum Vitae - EuroPass; 9) It provided the participants with an impacting experience, promoting for many of them a unique opportunity; 10) The interaction with other young people, from different cultures, also created opportunities for the development of language skills and could awake the interest for other languages and cultures of the participating countries, encouraging the participation in other mobility programmes. It is no less important to mention that the exchange experience also fostered in the participants a greater knowledge of the opportunities, programmes and strategies of the European Union, thus encouraging them to become more actively involved in European education and the different European programmes aimed at youth mobility. Finally, it should be reinforced that the intention was to develop these competences essentially through non-formal education methodologies, avoiding evasive dynamics. It was also taken into consideration that this project has different phases and that capacity building was foreseen at different moments. The project was based on a model of non-formal education, seeking to provide experiences and learning opportunities, crucial to the personal and social development of participants for a more inclusive exercise of citizenship and appreciation of cultural diversity.
