Objectives

Although humanity has gradually begun to realize the impact it has on the planet and the urgent need for measures in environmental issues, the lack of environmental education still raises major problems among the younger generation and its interest in the topic. In Romanian schools, eco-education is an optional subject, which means that the little ones learn notions about the environment and pollution either from home or, if the context arises, from teachers. Most of the time students get in touch with environmental education through programs and actions organized in educational institutions by NGOs. Lack of infrastructure and the absence of ecological education made systematically, deepened the problem even more. Given the context and the challenges it is understood that environmental protection means more than cleaning and conscious garbage disposal. Recycling is vital for our planet but, unfortunately, many European countries do not give it much interest, neither the authorities nor the community. The municipal waste recycling rate remains very low in Romania, at 14%, and includes 7% of material recycling and 7% of composting, according to the country report on the 2019 assessment of the implementation of EU environmental policies (EIR ), prepared by the European Commission. According to another EC report, 14 EU countries risk not being able to reach the municipal waste recycling target set for 2020. Romania is on the second place in the tail of the ranking. The idea for this project came at the initiative of the young high school students from Resita with whom we work frequently and who claimed that they need encouragement to be more active in environmental and ecological issues. Their inspiration came from the protests for environment from fall 2019, when teens all over the Europe protested for 2 months to raise awarness of global pollution. In Romania, only 3 young people protested for one week in Bucharest, an intriguing aspect that tells a lot about the interest for environmental problems among Romanian young people. Using a survey among young people in local highschools in Resita and Caras-Severin county, we established that the reason for this lack of interest and involvement on the part of the young generation in terms of environmental issues is lack of information. According to Greenpeace, one of the largest environmental NGOs in the world, there is no ecological education in Romania or interest in this field. Social involvement and civic sense go hand in hand with education for life and transforming children into responsible and educated adults, and the good news is that ecological attitudes and behavior are learn. The aim of the project was to increase the level of knowledge and civic sense among young people, regarding ecology and environmental protection. We planned that through the activities within the youth exchange to raise an alarm signal at local level, in Resita and Caras- Severin, as well as the other 4 local communities of the partners, on local environmental issues and the need for active involvement of youth in solving them. The objectives of the project were: 1. Increasing knowledge about ecology and environmental protection among the 25 participants, during the exchange 2. Development of the spirit of initiative, civic participation and active involvement among the 25 participants, during the exchange 3. Increasing creativity and artistic skills by finding sustainable alternatives to environmental issues, among those 25 participants, during the exchange 4. Increasing knowledge about recycling and sustainability among the 25 participants+5 group leaders during the exchange Our project fully contributed to the fulfillment of the following objectives of the Erasmus + program: - supporting young people in acquiring learning outcomes (knowledge, skills and competences), in order to improve their personal development, their involvement as responsible and active citizens in the European labor market and outside of it; - involving young people in recognizing the ecological situation at local and national level and how they can collaborate with the programs communities Needs that were addressed by the project: - the need for ecological education among young people - the need for knowledge about pollution, recycling, ecology - the need to motivate young people to be actively involved for the environment
