Objectives

By implementing the youth exchange “Youth United for Truth”, we wanted to create a space for young people from Sweden, Georgia, Poland and Ukraine to start an intercultural dialogue, improve communication, discover the topic of media literacy and allow participants to enjoy and understand other cultures. We were keen to make the participants more media literate and willing to evaluate any information they get from media critically; check the sources and distinguish information based on facts from the interpretations and biased news. We wanted to achieve the extended effect of the project by encouraging the partner organisations and youth to share the results of the project during local youth events in home countries as well as in local Media and informal groups. Through the workshops and activities, we encouraged the partner organisations to start working with the topic of media literacy more actively on the local level and incorporate related activities into their regular youth work. Planned project activities provided the participants with the opportunity to become more confident, and ready to build new friendships and interact with the representatives of other cultures. This made the participants more open to different people regardless of their national, cultural and geographical backgrounds. The skill to build your own opinion not on what you see or read but critically evaluate becomes a crucial skill for the modern generation. During this project, we organised discussions, group work and workshops in order to make young people understand that they shouldn’t trust everything they read in the media, especially about other countries, cultures and political events. We wanted youth to understand that each event can be reported in news with different connotations and interpretations. One more result of the project is long-term partnerships and mutual work on spreading awareness about the project’s topic. The partners agreed to spread information and materials which were processed and created by the participants during the project’s activities. The objectives of the project were the following: - To increase media literacy competencies among the participants; - To create media materials like video, pictures, MEMs and brochures with tips on how to critically assess information in media; - To promote values of intercultural dialogue, tolerance, and respect for diversity among young people in the EU and neighbouring countries; - To find common ground and innovative ideas for future partnerships using the skills and knowledge of people from diverse backgrounds.
