The initiative for this project was a consequence of the seriousness of the situations associated with the growing mental health problems. We were encouraged by the awareness that youth workers and organizations are increasingly coming in contact with young people who are experiencing personal mental struggles but yet most youth workers aren’t trained or capable to deal with it or don’t have a good understanding in this direction. In order to empower youth workers in this field, we delved into intensive research, especially connected to the Western world, where the problem is most prevalent. It's a fact that we are living in a rapidly evolving world, which enables us more benefits and conveniences than ever, yet the level of individuals facing depression, anxiety, eating disorders, or even causing self-harm or commit suicide, keeps increasing. Mental distress also affects the level of addictions and domestic violence. There is a huge number of "solutions" available so an individual can easily get lost in the flood of information especially when many are contradictive or hard to understand. Another problem is, that far too many professionals and tools focus on tackling the consequences instead of discovering the origin of the problem and providing sustainable solutions. Certain changes and general level of understanding is desperately needed in the field of mental health. Numerous studies show that a large number of individuals have failed to get better with the help of medication and psychiatrical treatment and even thought there are more methods and tools available each day, the number of mental health problems and dissorders keeps growing and growing. Living in a society that is considered developed and privileged can cause great stress and pressure as we strive to meet high societal expectations and reach certain standards, which are put upon us by our environment and families. Lack of understanding and generational differences make it hard for individuals to get needed support even if they speak about it. There is a huge need for raising general awareness especially about different needs based on unique personal experiences of people and getting permission to not be okay, regardless of how the circumstances look on the outside. Ongoing fears related to future, the inability to cope with problems that are stocking one onto another, the unexpressed desires and the heavyweight of expectations, sense of guilt and incompetence, feelings of being misunderstood, unworthy, hopeless, without ability to find motivation or thought of being a burden to others are very common to most people who face mental difficulties. We believe that this project provided a better understanding of our beliefs, actions and expectations from different point of view. It provided greater awareness of our differences and what our real needs are and from where many of our doubts and fears originate from. It offered tools and understanding about how we can recognize what is happening in our body and ability to have conscious control and skills to regulate it and find the actual reasons. It helped participants getting in touch with questions that are very relevant and can serve as our own guidance but we usually don't think of them. Participants develop better understanding of what is behind most common mental dissorders. They got introduced first hand with different methods and acquainted concrete tools that they can use in their work and personal life. We also wanted them to achieve better ability to think critically and to be able to distinguish between the many available so-called solutions and to understand them, as well as being able to distinguish which tool or technique to use in individual situations. At the same time, we wanted to upgrade the level of self-confidence among participants and strengthen or empower them in the role of youth workers, based on gaining greater self-awareness and many competencies and skills that would contribute to their professional and personal development. The objectives of this project were: - to raise general mental health awareness among young people and improve their ability to cope with problems, - to increase the ability of critical thinking and self-awareness among young people, - to empower participants by providing them concrete tools and methods to be more capable of assisting the youth, facing personal struggles and to train them to become more competent youth workers, - to raise the level of awareness of the participants about themselves, the environment and about the importance of reflections. - to bring together organizations from some partner and program countries and to establish a foundation for long-term partnership and cooperation.
