This Youth Exchange Mobility project was developed in response to feedback from young people during the evaluation stage of a successful previous project, "Solving by Involving: Increasing engagement of young people with poor academic performance and early school leavers through volunteering". Our French partner contacted IVOLO to inform us that this topic was very relevant to their work & would like to host the activity legs of the project to bring like-minded partners from our European network together who represent the local communities of participating countries & youth coming from BAME communities. The passion connecting the young people involved in the project idea was that they all had a great interest to be involved in a project aimed at the promotion of sports volunteering as a way to enhance social inclusion & increase community participation. The partners wished to carry out this project, because sports volunteering is the ideal conduit for integrating people & creating social cohesion. Not only is it popular but is also readily accessible to every layer of society. Thus, it can be quite effective in integrating young people coming from BAME (Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic) communities. Sports volunteering is also ideal for improving physical and mental well-being. Through sports volunteering there is tremendous potential for the fostering of common European values: integrity, inclusion, gender equality, ideals of fair play, self-worth, teamwork, mutual respect & acceptance of diversity. Cannes was the ideal city for this project having all of the resources we required to implement & succeed not just in the short term but long term with this project. We used examples of good practice, shared experiences, peer-to-peer youth approaches, coordination with local business communities & authorities interested in promoting sports volunteering activities, the acquisition & application of soft skills, entrepreneurship, sustainability, mentoring and community involvement to reach our goals. The objectives set for this project were: - Reaching out to young people with BAME background through sports volunteering initiatives; - Promoting the concept & the values of community/civic involvement through sports & games as a way to encourage broader community commitment & spark a sense of civic responsibility & belonging; - Promoting a wider understanding of social exclusion & how to engage & motivate young people to become part of their community through participation or volunteer activity related to sports; - encouraging better health by volunteering in sports; - encouraging innovative ideas, skills in planning projects, critical thinking skills, sustainment, dissemination of ideas, self-confidence, teamwork, interest in volunteering as a way to increase life skills, organisation skills, soft skills, learning how to access resources & inclusion; - Equipping the participants with empowerment skills which will enable them to share their knowledge with their peers; - Increased inter-cultural & linguistic tolerance. Follow up activities were done to ensure adequate support, dissemination & sustainment of the project goals. This was coordinated between the partners & overseen by the UK partner. Our project embraced the values of BLM & did not exclude anyone regardless of their race or background from the project. Our project was open to anyone with an interest in the topic, & recruitment of the participants by the partners was fair & transparent. The project represented young participants from a variety of backgrounds including participants whose ethnic backgrounds included, Central Asians from Latvia, North Africans from France, Afro-Caribbean from the UK, Karaims from Trakai, Lithuania, Roma from Bucharest & Turkish immigrants in Plovdiv. Young people from each partner including volunteer peer leaders from Birmingham, UK, youth sport leaders from Plovdiv, representatives of Trakai junior Basketball team, members of the International Society Guild at StudentNet, young experts in volunteer placement finding to enhance social inclusion prospects at Centrul de Voluntariat Bucuresti & peer leaders from immigrant communities represented by our French partner, CPEIJ Sunrise, helped to develop & delivered aspects of the daily programme. They were determined to make this project a success & took lead roles. They were involved in the planning of this project since its inception, focusing on increasing a sense of social inclusion & community participation among youth representing BAME communities. To summarise the outcomes of the project, we used examples of good practice, shared experiences, peer-to-peer youth approaches, coordination with the local youth & sport communities who are interested in promoting sports volunteering activities, which, in turn, lead to the acquisition & application of soft skills, entrepreneurship, sustainability, mentoring & community involvement & engagement in order to reach our goals.
