Background

Our school is located in a densely built-up area (partly heavily subsidized housing by the City of Vienna) in the middle of Vienna and is part of the public school system. The location is currently attended by 276 students aged 6 to 12 in 14 classes. (This increased age average is due to the mandatory attendance of the legally anchored German language support measures for learners with a first language other than German). The students of the educational institution have a wide variety of first languages (currently 26), religions, interests, talents (from highly gifted to severely intellectually impaired), abilities, social origins (often the maximum educational level in the families is a compulsory school leaving certificate), attitudes, mentalities and needs (about 10% of the students have a refugee background). All teachers at the school work daily to ensure that opportunities are opened up for all learners in order to realize equitable participation in society. Dialogical processes are our basis for openness in dealing with diversity. Each individual can thus contribute to avoiding stereotypical categorizations.
