The mdw – University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna stands out among arts- and music-focused HEIs for its high degree of internationality. Various forms of Erasmus(+) mobility have been implemented on a step-by-step basis since 1992/93 and now represent integral components of everyday teaching, learning, and working. Special projects likewise make use of various offerings. For Erasmus+, a set of rules based on the programme’s requirements was gradually created that established “rules of play” now familiar to all involved individuals and cooperating partners. Especially when programme requirements remain stable over the long term, this helps reduce time-consuming advance clarification of conduct modalities, enhances transparency and efficiency, and makes it possible to focus sooner on actual content. By the same token, however, it also limits the latitude for adaptation to the special features and specific needs of our sector. The delicate challenge here is therefore to balance the desires of the mdw’s students, teachers, and administrative employees with strategic goals and programme offerings without having to make significant substantive sacrifices or deep-reaching formal concessions.
