The stories that queer people and especially minority groups within the queer community (e.g. queer people of color or trans people) see on screen are often very limited. It‘s rare that we feel represented by identities and narratives in films. If there is queer representation in mainstream film, we are usually sidekicks. If stories are told with a queer protagonist, they are usually white and cisgender. This creates the feeling for many queer people that they are not important or invisible and it contributes to people around us not understanding queer realities, lifestyles and experiences. Queer Cinema in the Mountains aimed to draw a bridge between LGBTQIA+ social activism, filmmaking, and the production of images. It seeked to provide an avenue for queer youth from all over Europe to try out being curators, filmmakers and storytellers. In this youth exchange they acquired basic skills and knowledge in filmmaking and how to use visual images and discourses to challenge gender and social norms. This interdisciplinary project also strived to contribute to the ongoing campaign for sexual orientation and gender identity expression (SOGIE) and the visual representation of the queer community in films. Our objectives wee: 1. Create a safer space for queer youth from around Europe to be themselves, both at the youth exchange and in their daily lives after the project. 2. Promote young queer people’s active citizenship and increase their participation in society 3. Foster mutual understanding and solidarity between young queer people in different European countries 4. Promote queer intersectional cinema and little-known queer filmmakers 5. Promote Erasmus+ as an opportunity for the participants 6. Create new long-lasting partnerships between organizations from all around Europe working with queer youth 7. Promote European values of democracy, human rights, gender equality and non-violence
