Objectives

This project aimed to raise awareness among the young people of the EU, and its benefits for the member countries as well as citizens, but also create a learning space where participants could learn about the EU's history and structure. At the same time, we encouraged critical thinking, and criticising the EU and its bodies, researching the parliament members representing our participants and their regions, brainstorming ways of approaching `Brussels´ and being the change we want to see in the EU and world. As the four freedoms were for the first time threatened after the creation of the Union with the Covid crisis, and some governments took rather authoritarian measures, even when not needed, we took time to discuss the basics of the EU law and purpose, adding the idea of transferring more competencies to the EU from the members. Our participants gained knowledge in the field, and understand the limited competencies of the EU now in the field of health, education, and employment, as well as limitations when it comes to creating an EU military. Practising critical thinking was one of the most important objectives of this project, as young people have never had so much information available online, and been bombed by propaganda, tollers and bots, influencing the elections and public opinion. We have delivered workshops that equip young people with knowledge and skills to read and see videos while thinking critically, looking for the big picture and researching other sources with reliable information before developing an opinion. The EU citizenship was discussed on a day, as many of the participants are not holders of any citizenship at the moment as refugees, while others had more experience and were aware of all the benefits that come along with it. This allowed for the exchange of knowledge and experience between the group, and new ideas for joining international programmes or educational projects. They developed a broader picture of what voting in EU elections is important for, and who to approach when searching for information for their academic research, work position, project application or applying for a job at EPSO. We discussed the Green deal with the participants, as an EU policy affecting our daily lives in many fields, and concluded that personalizing the problem of global warming and planetary destruction might lead to dangerous consequences. As some participants pointed out, the Covid lockdowns taught us not to be fast in blaming others for certain actions we are not even sure are responsible for the spread of the virus, or prevention. This YE brought the EU closer to the group, also reminding everyone that we are those that make it, as its citizens. The participants could understand not only how this supranational organization works, but also their potential role in its development of it. As single citizens, it is hard to make any change. Still, Article 12 of the Charter of the Fundamental Rights of the EU guarantees rights to peaceful assembly, as a basis for NGOs, then Umbrella organisations, associations and other larger organisations that are able to advocate for changes and new EU laws, making ideas from the people reach the top.
