Volunteerism plays an important role in the development of skills and competences of the people engaging with it. It is a way in which we support local communities and organizations and provide the volunteers with the opportunity to have some practical learnings by engaging them with new ways of thinking. It is then, a powerful tool to learn from one another. More importantly Volunteerism should be a tool that is beneficial for everybody. It should always keep in mind the do not harm policy. Volunteerism should always consider the volunteers, the sending and hosting organisations, the projects and its clients, and the community in general when creating new projects as relevant actors while ensuring their wellbeing. Nevertheless, volunteerism has been criticised as it sometimes promotes colonialist ideas such as the „white saviour syndrome“, where the volunteers instead of learning from other cultures they are determined to "help" those most in need, and „show the way of efficient work“ to projects in the global south. With this training we took a step back and took a look to our preparation trainings in our organisations, we asked our selves if we are preparing our volunteers with the empathy and sensitivity that they need to understand the real role tha they have as volunteeers in the global south. We took an intersectional approach in order to deal with these and other current and important debates such as gender equality, green policies, the inclusion of volunteers with fewer opportunities. Thru this reflexion process we want to work with a more concious understanding of what does it means to be a volunteer and what does volunteers of the global north bring to the global south , not only in in a working way but also as global citizens. We want to provide the volunteers with the necessary tools that helps them understand that this is a learning process that will be beneficial for their future. Understand the meaning of been volunteer and understand and respect the cultures where our volunteers are activily working is key in our work, therefore the first logical step for us was to work with the preparation process for volunteers going to the global south.
