European colonialism for centuries has exploited people, land and resources in Africa, Asia, the Americas and Oceania and the consequences of this are more than visible until today. Also today, European governments and companies are contributing to and driving global injustices. There is a lack of awareness and of political action in Europe to stop these injustices. Europeans need to raise awareness about Europe’s involvement in global injustices and put pressure on decision-makers to contribute to an end to poor labour conditions, environmental destruction and unfair access to healthcare and education in the world. With this project, we wanted to support young people in Europe on their journey to become active citizens for global justice and against neocolonialism, racism and simplistic colonial narratives of „helping“. The first training will tackle this. European volunteering organisations that send volunteers to the Global South need extensive knowledge on the complicated historical, political and economic context that this takes place. They need to be self-critical and have a good base of methods to support volunteers in a reflection process of their own motivation and the international historical context of their volunteering, Also, to prepare volunteers going to the Global South as well as approaches to involve them in becoming active citizens around global justice when coming back to Europe. Most volunteering organisations in Europe lack these skills or often need a repetition of seminars like this in order to keep their skills in this topic relevant. The second training will tackle this. The objectives of the project were: Share/discuss approaches and methods how to make volunteers and young people in general critically reflect about neocolonial attitudes and their connection with colonial history as well as how these relate to themselves Share/discuss approaches and methods on how youth and volunteering organisations in Europe can show solidarity, build a grassroots movement, and/or create campaigns in North-South cooperation Create new youth projects around global justice Create institutional changes in European youth and volunteering organisations around how North-South volunteering exchanges are done and thus shift the neocolonial discourse among European volunteering organisations more towards global justice Improve the critical skills around neocolonialism and global justice among youth workers sending volunteers to the Global South Create a new fifth improved version of the toolkit „Picturing the Global South: The Power Behind Good Intentions“ Network between the organisations involved in the application
