Background

The European Digital Education Action Plan 2021-2027 aims to foster a high-performing digital education ecosystem and enhance digital skills. The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the adoption of digital technologies in education, prompting higher education institutions to rapidly transition to online learning. This shift allowed many students to continue their studies but also highlighted challenges. Key concerns include ensuring access to digital education for all and addressing barriers like the lack of convenient learning spaces. The rise of online, distance, blended learning has diversified learning activities beyond formal settings, necessitating a re-evaluation of physical and virtual learning spaces. Research indicates that integrating "Onlife Spaces" can transform existing physical spaces and activate new ones, impacting learners' health, well-being, and performance. While informal learning spaces have gained importance, little is known about their impact on students' experiences and the barriers they present. The NIILS project aimed to address these barriers by raising awareness, reducing inequalities, and promoting inclusive and technologically enhanced informal learning environments that support learning and well-being.
