Objectives

In the context of an international internship, our students can achieve different objectives that are more challenging to obtain at home. With that in mind, we expect them to adopt an open, respectful and polite attitude, both towards classmates and foreign students. They will embrace different cultures as many students have never been to Slovakia and have therefore no concept of everyday Slovak life. Moreover, they will learn to keep to deadlines and agreements while given certain freedom as they will not constantly be supervised and have to take responsibility for themselves and others. This way, they will develop basic skills such as cooking, using public transport and organising a household amongst other things. Self-reliance is key in every skill. The students will be expected to speak and lead amongst peers, both in their mother tongue and in English. In group, they will have to learn to cooperate and take on different roles within said groups. Lastly, they will practice and teach indoor and outdoor sports to Slovak students in English.

Background

Our school, Atheneum KAMSA, a sports oriented school is situated in Aarschot, Belgium. The students are mainly interested in practicing sports and in their final year, they have the opportunity to complete a two-week sport-related internship. They often enroll in a gym, elementary school, sports shop or help in community service. This gives them the chance to experience a real life job in which they can implement their knowledge of the sports they have been practicing for several years. KAMSA focusses on three basic principles: I can do it myself, I feel like I belong and I am allowed to do it myself. We dream of a society full of people with a positive and learning outlook on life, who want to develop their strengths and talents continually, gaining confidence to grow into the person they most want to be. An internship abroad enables our students to enlarge their social and language skills and views on the world. In general, the students sometimes lack intrinsic motivation and a proper outlook on life, and an international internship clearly inspires them, making it possible for them to outshine themselves in the predetermined goals to succeed in their internship.
