Objectives

Everyone is carrier of a psyche that has both a healthy and an unhealthy side. Depending on phases in life and influenced by many factors (cfr. Debate “nature versus nurture”) one side can get the overhand. Parallel this personal experience, we all know someone that is struggling with their mental health. Despite its widespread appearance, it remains uncommon to talk about mental health among friends, in schools, in families. And if we talk about it, the conversation is mostly led by adults who are connected to a health institution. Issues and needs that we want to address: (1) On an individual level, we address the need for young people to meet and talk about mental health and to let their voice be heard in creating projects on mental health. On the level of the organisations, we address the need to learn more about participation of young people in designing and execution of international projects on mental health. (2) On the level of society, we address the need to open up stigma-free conversations on mental health. The project's objectives: Share/Care was set up as an international youth exchange between young people and their respective organisations who want to connect and collaborate on the participatory possibilities for youth in mental health projects. We aim to lower the barriers to share and learn about mental health among young people and help to minimize the societal stigma on mental health care. To achieve this, the project planned to visit local examples for inspiration (such as Headspace and Discovery Colleges) and to support the participants to co-create an international pilot project by and for young people, around the theme of mental health. At the end of the project, • participants will have experienced the power of international exchange, have learned, connected and collaborated with other European youngsters on the topic of mental health, across language and cultural barriers. They will have been able to express their needs concerning the theme of mental health, will have reflected upon and created a project in line of their own ideas; and • (2) the participating organisations will have built up more knowledge and understanding on young people's needs and the possibilities of participation in mental health projects. They will have worked together and created links for possible future bottom-up/grassroots projects in the line of mental health, as a parallel path next to the health sector
