Objectives

The main motivation behind this project was to help youth develop their emotional intelligence, a competence linked with success and wellbeing in many life domains. Despite its undeniable importance, most life contexts hardly ever focus on developing emotional skills, which ends up having detrimental effects. In addition to the individual’s struggles in handling his emotions, these negative effects go as far as enhancing discrimination of particular groups. Unfortunately, crisis situations seem to foster hostility and racism, as proven by stories of discrimination against people of Asian origins during the COVID-19 pandemic. Although a war in Ukraine definitely wasn’t a crisis situation we were expecting when the project application was written, as it unfolded, some news stories only further supported the need for a project like this one, one which helps people better understand and cope with their negative emotions, instead of letting them fuel discriminatory acts. Our main project objectives were to: 1.Raise awareness about the role of (often unconscious) stereotypes and prejudices in sustaining discrimination among our participants and their local communities through self-awareness and non-formal activities. 2.Raise awareness about the relationship between emotional intelligence and discrimination among our participants and their local communities through non-formal methods. 3.Raise awareness of how the media exploits emotions for manipulation purposes among our participants and their local communities through real life examples of such news. During the Youth Exchange, we aimed to: 1.Expand the knowledge about emotional intelligence of young people through guided reflection and non-formal activities. 2.Expand the knowledge about stereotypes, prejudices, and discrimination of young people thorough self-awareness and non-formal activities. 3.Develop the socio-emotional skills of young people, such as emotional awareness, through guided reflection and models from psychology. 4.Change the attitudes of young people regarding people outside their own groups by highlighting the relationship between emotions and discrimination and through real-life examples of the media exploiting it.
