Objectives

The objective of GoGreen4Schools is to raise awareness to our students, teachers, parents and communities about the Environmental issues and how to change habits, behavior and thinking to reduce our foodprint of CO2 emissions. The Environment is in danger and our students will be the inhabitants of earth in 50 years from now and will have to face the consequences, if we don't change the way we act. So it is crucial to change the future generations' way of thinking and acting in a more ecological way. Furthermore, we wanted to have close relationships with schools from other European countries, in order to share ideas and build various projects together. For the foodprint calculator project, we developed an electronic questionnaire which the students from the partners schools, completed. The results were analyzed and discussed by the students and they made suggestions how to reduce the individual footprint. On the sustainable island they had to propose ways for energy efficient buildings, sustainable transportation and water supply. On the zero emission house they had to propose ways to build the house using solar panels, insulating materials and green roofs. We made our schools greener by planting more trees and herbs.

Background

Our aim was to raise awareness among our students, communities and countries about Environmental issues and how to reduce our foodprint, by recycling and reducing waste. We promoted the idea of ReThink, ReUse, ReCycle, Reduce. This join project with our partners, who all share the same views about the Environment, was about bringing young people together, so they had the chance to bond, to communicate, to share ideas and to build things together. We visited their schools and countries and we experienced their way of tackling problems. Our school is a Public secondary school at a rural area of Famagusta District. Our students are between 12-15 years old. We have participated to the Ecological Schools for 3 years and hopefully we will receive the Green Flag this year. We participated in many programs and competitions for Environmental issues: MindREset, Schools as Living Labs, Walk the Global Walk, Young Reporters, CYMERA, EU-Conexus, SCYENCE Fair and we got the 1st price in the last two competitions. Also, we paricipated in cleaning our school and the surrounding areas. We also encouraged recycling of paper, plastic, batteries and used frying oil. Our students completed a questionnaire for the International and Citizenship Study.
