Objectives

2022 marked the 35th anniversary or the Erasmus+ programme – a milestone for Europe! The Erasmus programme was established in 1987 as an exchange programme for higher education students. Over the past 35 years, the programme has given 9 million people the chance to study, train, volunteer or gain professional experience abroad. “Celebrating ERASMUS” was a youth exchange in Cyprus between 13-21 October 2022 which aimed to bring 56 young people and 8 group leaders in order to learned more about the Key Actions of the program, to make new contacts and share experiences, knowledge and skills. The Youth exchange was held during the Erasmus Days which was an event running from 13th to 15th October 2022 that celebrated the Erasmus Plus programme as a whole. The event celebrated the programme’s success and showcases the benefits of the life-changing learning experiences it offers. This international celebration was based on a very simple concept: over three specific days, promote European values, mobility benefits and Erasmus+ project results, in order to boost visibility for citizens, stakeholders, media and policy makers. Each participant during the project shared personal experiences, and discuss achievements and challenges of the EU’s flagship programme for education, training, youth and sport. There have been substantial changes to the Erasmus+ over the years; it has been continuously modernised, expanded and opened up to countries that were not part of it in its early days. Starting with just 3,000 university students, the programme now offers cooperation and mobility opportunities in school education for pupils and teachers, in vocational education and training, higher education and adult education, as well as projects for apprentices, young people, youth workers, and even (as of 2023) sport coaches. This enlargement in geographic and sectoral scope resulted in 2021, despite the adverse sanitary situation, in over 615.000 realised mobilities. In 2014, the name changed to Erasmus+ to mark the broadening of the programme to all education fields as well as Youth and Sport. Erasmus+ brings opportunities for all ages to discover other countries through a wide choice of participating organisations. Challenges have been turned into opportunities, as Erasmus+ was adapted to quickly respond to the COVID-19 pandemic through simplified rules and procedures to better accommodate for mobilities. The youth exchange supported the green and digital transitions, while helping to foster active citizenship and greater participation in democratic life. Inclusion remained a core priority of the project to allowed more people to learn and participate in transnational projects but also to reach out to increasing numbers of people with fewer opportunities. The project “Celebrating ERASMUS” brought together in Cyprus 64 youth leaders and youngsters from 8 countries around Europe: The youth exchange took place from 13-21 October 2022 and during these 9 days participants discussed and learnt about Multiculturalism in today’s society and how ERASMUS+ can be used as a tool to disseminate and promote its benefits. Our project aimed to give a strong positive experience of international youth work and motivate participants to use Erasmus+ Youth in Action Programme. This aim summarised the entire idea of the youth exchange – to give a feeling, what it means to work with young people in an international setting. Leaving all explanations and knowledge aside it was about giving a space for participants to explore the advantage of “internationality” themselves. "Celebrating ERASMUS" was designed according to the following objectives: • To taste non-formal and intercultural learning • To enjoy the intercultural youth project experience • To exchange local youth activities in the international context • To explore possibilities of support available for international youth activities offered by the Erasmus+ Youth in Action Programme • To analyse examples of qualitative youth projects supported by the Erasmus+ Youth in Action Programme • To see how to benefit from international context in participants local work practice. • To promote the reflection on multiculturalism in today's society; • To use creativity and art as a tool to disseminate the benefits of multiculturality; • To promote the use of youth participation as a tool to reinforce people's awareness of other cultures, promote inter-cultural dialogue and eliminate prejudice. An enduring European success story, Erasmus+ is a cultural phenomenon that has been credited with fostering a pan-European identity. Experiencing and learning from other cultures is at the heart of Erasmus+. Openness to other cultures is a win-win: it's not only rewarding in itself but also brings with it new ideas and experiences that we can observe and then accept or politely decline. The project was a great opportunity for young people to explore the actions of ERASMUS and discovered its opportunities.
