In the common opinion of the project partners, after the COVID-19 pandemic, the world is not the same place we had lived in before. Restricted offline studying, extra health security checks while traveling, and an increasing number of remote job positions became the new normal for many. And these circumstances pushed the European authorities to close the borders narrowing transnational collaboration methods in tackling the common problems. As a result, many people lost faith in changes and the capacity of the European community to handle common challenges. Also, we have seen young people as the most vulnerable group to lose their capabilities to impact political decisions, agitate for international cooperation in resolving local and regional problems, and participate in the democracy-building processes on national and European levels. According to the research on the COVID-19 impact on young people and the youth sector provided by the Council of Europe, young people faced challenges to participating in political processes, institutions, and policy-making at the best of times, owing to factors such as their presumed lack of experience, limited opportunities, and legal barriers, for example, the minimum age required to run for office being higher than the one required to vote. All of these made us as youth organizations worrisome for the future of European unity, the citizen role of young people, and democratic development on the continent overall. We still do believe in the power of youth action and its ability to prevent disintegration trends in the European Union with the tools of citizen and democracy education, local youth initiatives, nurturing leadership skills in youth activists, and appealing to European solidarity through local and regional actions. We had seen youth workers as agents of positive change in those matters. Considering our worries and wish to impact, the project partners agreed that the aim of our project is to provide youth workers engaged in direct work with active youth knowledge and skills of citizen and democracy education for mentoring and guiding youth projects and initiatives in the themes of cooperation and development in EU through local actions. Consequently, the objectives of the mobility project for youth workers were: - to guide youth workers in the fundamentals and practicalities of citizen and democracy education for young people; - to advocate non-formal and informal learning methods for youth work in citizen and democracy education; - to equip youth workers with expertise on how to mentor and coach youth projects and initiatives related to citizen, European, and other political themes; - to provide participants of the training course with practical insights into the political development of Europe and democracy-building on a local community level and their impact on transnational civic and youth cooperation within the European Union; - to give insights into the importance of democratic values in local youth and community work, such as freedom of expression, equality, civic virtue, faith in change, etc. Thus, the project was designed to provide youth workers engaged in direct work with active youth knowledge and skills of citizen and democracy education for mentoring and guiding youth projects and initiatives in the themes of cooperation and development in the EU through local actions. Additionally, through youth activities, the project (as a first step) aimed to prevent disintegration trends in the European Union with the tools of citizen and democracy education, local youth initiatives, nurturing leadership skills in youth activists, etc. Also, we wanted the participants to gain insights into European democratic development, fundamentals of citizen and democracy education using methods of non-formal education, and get knowledge on how to engage youngsters more actively in local projects dedicated to the European theme. We considered this project as an investment in the skills, competencies, and knowledge of youth workers from different parts of the EU. Citizen and democracy education is was a new field for most partner organizations and it supposed to increase our capacity to impact on local, national, and European levels.
