Objectives

We aimed to help students understand the concept of a “healthy lifestyle” and its benefits for both physical and mental well-being in daily life. We also wanted them to recognize the consequences of their choices, such as neglecting their health. By encouraging students to take on challenges and maintain them for a set period, we hoped to instil habits that would become essential and automatic in their lives. These challenges would help students discover personal growth through self-assessment techniques and basic self-coaching. We wanted to support the professional development of educators, particularly in promoting healthy lifestyles and designing self-assessment plans. Since English was the language of our partnership, we encouraged students to improve their social, emotional, and language skills through various activities and shared experiences, as these were effective learning methods for their age group. Additionally, we aimed to foster intercultural connections between schools in Europe, helping our students become more tolerant of different cultures and beliefs.

Background

The Step Up Face the Challenges project was created for students aged 12-15 from five European countries, aiming to promote a healthy lifestyle in low secondary schools. Integrating healthy living into the curriculum is one of the most exciting challenges in education today. Emphasizing a healthy lifestyle encourages personal growth and life changes, focusing not just on understanding what benefits the body but also on developing the motivation to face and overcome challenges. This project extends beyond our schools, fostering cooperation that brought a European perspective into classrooms and communities. A survey among participating students found that a significant majority viewed challenges as essential for personal growth, although many also expressed a fear of change. Additionally, a substantial portion of students admitted to not having a balanced diet, but most recognized the benefits of sports for their well-being. Encouragingly, over half of the students believed that schools could aid in their journey toward healthier lifestyles. This initiative highlights the crucial role of motivation and education in empowering students to adopt and maintain healthy habits.
