Objectives

By implementing the project, we aimed to unify and refine best practices in tree consultancy across European countries. The project was designed to create high-quality materials defining the minimum requirements for professionals providing tree care consultancy. As part of this effort, we reviewed the current state of knowledge and identified national specifications. The development of these tools helped improve communication between arborists, tree owners, tree managers, and other relevant stakeholders. Additionally, the project contributed to establishing a standardized qualification process and creating a foundation for effective training. ECoST built on the development of European arboricultural standards, providing high-quality tools for recognizing best practices in arboriculture and urban forestry, as well as supporting training and certification of professionals.

Background

The role of trees in urban environments is just as essential as in forest ecosystems. However, trees in non-forest greenery, similar to those in natural forests, are increasingly affected by climate change. With the growing interest in arboriculture and tree care, we have encountered varying levels of quality in assessment reports, which lack standardization. While practical tree care can already follow technical standards developed under the first Erasmus+ project, Technical Standards in Tree Work (TeST), there were still no established standards for consultancy in tree care. To address this gap, we applied for another Erasmus+ project, European Consulting Standards in Tree Work, aimed at defining best practices and guidelines for consultancy in arboriculture.
