Objectives

The IHL RED project aimed to establish clinical legal education in the area of IHL and humanitarian affairs as a core component of legal training in the European Education Area for the benefit of future generations of students. We intended to equip the next generation of IHL lawyers with an expertise applicable to real-world situations, thus improving these graduates' employability while at the same time offering specialized and trained recruits to employers. We wanted to improve and develop teaching strategies and methods in the field of IHL via the clinical method, encouraging a "learning by doing" approach. By relying on digital tools for accessibility and collaboration purposes, we wanted to make these methodologies and tools easily usable by other institutions of higher education. Promoting the sharing of knowledge and improving the skills demand-supply relations, all the while disseminating the core values of IHL mirrored our cooperation partnership's main objective: IHL RED, Research, Education and Dissemination.

Background

The IHL RED consortium strongly believes in the value of clinical legal education and has already seen promising successes in providing this innovative teaching method within their existing study programmes. Having developed and refined the methodology and tools of this format of engaging pedagogy and being committed to the use of digital technologies, the project partners intended to make these materials accessible on a European scale. Equipping students with an expertise applicable to real-world situations improves these graduates' employability while offering specialized and trained recruits to future employers. At the same time, the project partners have engaged in activities to approach the law faculties of other European universities to advance the clinical legal teaching method. By organizing dedicated conferences, the IHL RED consortium provided guidance in setting-up and running new IHL Clinics and connecting them amongst each other. Through a collaboration with the ICRC, the project has focused on mutual benefits and brought together providers of high-quality legal research with their potential clients, thereby further disseminating the values of IHL.
