The project “Enhancing young people's critical thought and media awareness” gathered 42 youngsters (6 participants aged 18-28 and one group leader per group) from Germany, Greece, Turkey, The Republic of North Macedonia, Croatia, and Romania for an 7-day youth exchange in Munich, Germany to discuss and address the necessity of media literacy promotion among young people. The activity was organized between 15/12- 21/12/2022 with a preparation APV meeting between 18/11-19/11-22. The German partner, based on the needs identified during the youth work, particularly, by discovering that media bias and understanding of media sources were growing challenges, initiated the project. The partner organizations supported the idea of the German partner, as the issue of unbiased media had antagonized the most vulnerable representatives of youth in their countries as well. The project participants were committed to holding the joint project on media literacy and critical thinking because it answered their local community challenges and also promoted international youth networking for the understanding of media and thus, in addition to that, promoted active citizenship and European values. The youth exchange promoted the principle of aware choice and aimed to equip young people with the necessary skills for being aware and responsible media consumers. The project objectives were: improving media literacy, critical thinking, and research skills of the participant youth; promoting intercultural communication and combating bias; development of the international youth networks on media literacy; increasing the debating, discussion, interaction and self-expression skills of the participants; promotion of active and responsible citizenship, and support participants to recognize and deal with Fake news. As media, traditional and modern (social media) heavily influenced shaping of the public opinion, it was necessary to have adequate knowledge of grasping the news and thus critically evaluating and rechecking what was given in a particular piece of news, as well as the source itself. The project participants were keen on exchanging their experiences and transferring their knowledge to their partners with the aim of international networking on media literacy and critical thinking. Coming from the EU member states, the project partners shared the common challenges of the recent antagonization of the most vulnerable youth, and unfortunately, the information that was biased towards minorities had been spread by various media sources. This project sought to give the youth the opportunity of “thinking outside the box” and by their interaction and intercultural experience, to handle any bias or stereotypes, and to become more independent, critical, and creative thinkers. Some of the methods used were workshops, role-plays, simulation games, icebreakers, presentations, discussions, and debates, analysis of read materials, critical writing, outdoor and indoor interactive activities, and intercultural team-building games. The youth exchange included thematic activities on media literacy from different angles. Non-formal and informal learning allowed fostering youth capacities to understand and critically evaluate the flow and sources of information. The expected project outcomes were: improved analytical, critical thinking, and research skills of young people; increased awareness about media literacy in 6 participant countries; young people acquiring intercultural skills, communicating and cooperating in the intercultural environment, and not being biased towards each other; growth of the international network of active youth; and better debating, discussion, constructive feedback, and professional presentation skills. The visibility actions further spread information about the project and sustained the initial impact. The young people themselves were the core for creating a long-lasting impact of the project. The project deliverables and tools were disseminated and revisited by youth networks for further promoting media literacy. The project promoted Erasmus+ program goals and raised awareness about its aims, goals, and actions. During the project, young people investigated the themes of communication, inclusion, integration, and safety for young people in traditional communities as well as modern communities.
