In the Covid-19 crisis, youth has paid a high price in terms of acquisition and exercise of specific skills and learning. A phenomenon that has affected all students, not only the most fragile but also those who in the absence of the perimeters of physicality - both of the school walls, of teachers and classmates – lost motivation and determination. In recent surveys, adolescents and young adults say that they feel tired, uncertain, worried, irritable, anxious, disoriented, nervous, apathetic, discouraged, alone in a succession of negative feelings. Some of them talk about these feelings with family and friends, but more than 1 on 5 does not share them with anyone. There is a clear increase in forms of self-harm and also in the suicide rate, and in the best of cases a strong and widespread feeling of discomfort and disorientation. “Re-designing wor(l)ds” aimed at promoting the mediation of conflicts and at acquiring a language capable to overcome experiences of isolation and confinement, to strengthen trust and self-confidence in young people and to (re)create an environment conducive to relationships and learning, and to a new culture of cooperation and social responsibility. We certainly agree with the E+ strategic priority stating the need to accelerate the digital transition, particularly in education, and to guarantee to all students and youth equal opportunity of access to high-quality formal and non-formal e-learning programmes. But we consider it extremely important to counterbalance the digital acceleration with an awareness-raising work aimed at recovering a new harmony between mind and body, connection and contact. The digital transition needs to be accompanied by an embodiment of the many virtual inputs, by the elaboration of new ways to be present in the digital dimension without losing the body, the senses, the perception of oneself as part of a living community composed by living individuals. Young people must learn to take care of themselves to take care of the world. Aims and objectives of “Re-designing Wor(l)ds” included: – to increase awareness of the European project and values by bringing together 30+ young people from 5 EU countries, providing them with a common framework to live and work together and to develop visions for a future Europe; – to improve the level of key competences and life skills of these young people, including those with fewer opportunities; – to enhance intercultural awareness, social inclusion and solidarity by living and embracing cultural diversity as a positive resource; – to provide space for mutual listening and exchange of views, experiences and perspectives, as well as development of visions for the future; – to favour a path of personal maturation towards greater levels of autonomy, personal self-esteem and motivation; – to empower participants to express their feelings and wishes, ideas and demands with artistic means, alternative and complementary to the spoken word to elaborate and express emotions and experiences, thus supporting their process of identity construction; – to reach a broad audience through a public performance and a video documentation of the whole creative and educational process made available online.
