A long-term project ENHANCE (Enhancing Diversity Management and Inclusion in Youth Work) was designed by a consortium. The consortium partners belonged to the European Union and Neighbouring countries. All the partner organisations are youth organisations. The project was coordinated by Life Learning Development e.V. (Germany). The aim of the project ENHANCE was to support 30 Youth workers, educators, and trainers. The participants belonged to the EU Member States (Germany, Belgium, Bulgaria, Greece, Portugal, Spain, and Romania) and EU's Neighbouring partner countries (Armenia, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Republic of North Macedonia, Moldova, Ukraine, and Turkey). The project supported the participants by increasing their awareness of the development of diversity management skills and implementing a diversity-oriented work culture while collaborating with young people. The consortium realised that a majority of young people across the EU lack the opportunity and spaces for expressing themselves. Most of them feel detached from mainstream society and are excluded and marginalised. A certain behavioural pattern has been developed by the education system, family, the media, and politics. This leads to a fear of uncertainty, being judgmental, rejecting the unknown, and excluding differences. However, these patterns are strongly connected to social habits and show potential for change. Therefore, to tackle this issue and enable change in societal behavioural patterns, the partners from different parts of the EU initiated the project. The project supported the acquisition of skills, knowledge, and attitude regarding diversity and inclusion among youth workers, educators, and trainers. It realised a strong need for change makers, educators, and youth workers who can professionally work against discrimination and underrepresentation of marginalised groups as well as foster participation of marginalised youth and support them in developing engagement capacities. It is possible to manage diversity by introducing various regulations, laws, and code of conduct. However, unless and until habits and education models produce stigma and prejudice, the laws would prove to be ineffective. Elevating diverse groups of people by supporting them in achieving success could turn out to be inconclusive if diversity is not managed properly. The partners designed a long-term training course. The aim of the course is to support youth workers, educators, and trainers by incorporating diversity awareness and behavior in their everyday activities. The main objectives of the Training Course were: Empowering youth workers, trainers, and educators to develop diversity orientation in their work with young people and build their competence in diversity management. Supporting youth workers in the incorporation of diversity into their working environment, thus, making their work more inclusive and effective. Promoting diversity-oriented attitudes and awareness within the European programs in the fields of Education, Training, and Youth. Introducing key theoretical aspects, the glossary as well as the practical tools, methods, and instruments to the youth workers who seek to implement the concept of diversity in their work. Discussing how the European Youth Work can reinforce equality and ensure that diverse groups of people get equal treatment during training and other formal and non-formal educational settings. Strengthening cooperation between involved organisations based in the EU and non-EU countries and developing joint projects on diversity and inclusion within the Erasmus+ program. The EU programs in the field of youth have enabled millions of young people from all walks of life to expand their horizons through study and training. Erasmus+ has become a cornerstone of diversity, with many of the projects directly investing in building inclusive European societies. Our project corresponds to the objectives of Erasmus+ project and goes in line with the “Europe 2020 Strategy” regarding education, the strategic framework for European cooperation in education and training as well as the promotion of European values. The project also addresses the main aims of KA1 because it focuses on supporting learners in the acquisition of competencies and supports the professional development of those who work in the fields of education and youth.
