This project was developed by young refugees from African countries (members of the groups Wind-Jain Eagles and Lucky Team Stars) together with Farafina Institute. It aimed to express the experiences and perceptions of refugees from African countries on societal issues, especially regarding their flight and their living situation in Germany, through creative arts (music, movie, storytelling). We wanted to achieve that by discussing their art work with young people and policy makers, the participating refugees would raise awareness of their situation, diminish stereotypes, and foster their participation in democratic life. Through this process, we aimed for the participating young African refugees to become multiplier. For this purpose we planned to develop a workshop program that would be implemented by them and continued after the end of the project. We targeted the following needs: 1) Young refugees are generally lacking opportunities to participate actively in democratic life, to share their perceptions on issues that concern them, and to engage with policy makers. At the same time they are often subject of stereotypes and discrimination; this is particularly true for refugees from African countries. 2) Young people in general lack opportunities to engage with young refugees, to learn about their past and present experiences and to exchange with them. This leads to stereotypes and misconceptions. 3) Policy makers who deal with issues of refugees hardly ever have the opportunity to engage with refugees directly and to exchange with them about the rational of policies that concern them. This leads to misconceptions on both sides. 4) Farafina Institute (FI) has been working with music and video activities for democratic participation of African refugees and wants to upscale and professionalise this work. On this basis, the objectives of the project were: - To provide young refugees from African countries with opportunities and competences to engage and become empowered to participate in civic society and democratic life through cultural expression; - To bring together young refugees from African countries with other young people (young people in general and other young refugees) and policy makers at local and national level to enter into dialoge about issues concerning young refugees in Germany; - To upscale and professionalise the previous work of FI in the area of fostering democratic participation of young African refugees in German society through arts.
