We wanted to challenge ourselves by carrying out a youth exchange in Greece, on a small island of Syros. It was logistically very different and new for us, so the whole experience was very exciting and enabled us to become better organizers in general. Since many of the young people in our team are big fans of filmmaking, we decided to use this medium to help young people learn more about a small island community and its culture. The core topic was culture, but we wanted to enable participants to discover the local culture through the filmmaking process. Next to the filmmaking, we also carried out cultural evenings to learn about the cultures of the countries present on this youth exchange. Our primary goal in implementing the project was to provide an enriching and engaging experience for the young participants, promoting intercultural learning and fostering an appreciation for diverse cultures through the medium of filmmaking. The objectives of our project were as follows: 1. To challenge ourselves as organizers by executing a youth exchange on the small, picturesque island of Syros in Greece, enabling us to enhance our logistical and planning skills in a new and unique environment. 2. To utilize filmmaking as a tool for cultural exploration, allowing the participants to delve into the local island community and gain a deeper understanding of its culture, customs, and traditions. 3. To facilitate the production of documentary-style short films by international groups, highlighting different aspects of the local community, and showcasing the richness of the island's culture. 4. To foster intercultural dialogue and collaboration among participants from diverse backgrounds, through various activities such as cultural evenings, where they could share and learn about each other's countries and cultures. 5. To enable participants to appreciate their own and other cultures by identifying both differences and similarities, ultimately fostering a sense of shared European identity and promoting intercultural understanding. 6. To educate participants about the socioeconomic challenges faced by small rural communities, like Syros, by exploring the factors that lead young people to leave these areas and the consequences of such migration on the survival and sustainability of rural regions. Through the filmmaking process, participants gained insights into the complex issues surrounding rural depopulation and its impact on local culture and economies. 7. To include new young people in the Erasmus+ programme and to promote the program to new audiences. Another goal was to enable young people to connect with each other and build new friendships that would last even after the youth exchange. By achieving these objectives, we aimed to create an atmosphere of mutual respect and understanding, empowering the young participants to embrace cultural diversity and develop valuable skills through the process of filmmaking. The vast majority of the learning happened through non-formal methods of trying to create a short documentary.
