Objectives

KNOWMAN's main objectives were to prepare and disseminate (i) an interactive guide and (ii) an e-learning, training module (Knowledge Pills) for helping KIBS SMEs to (better) manage their knowledge and be more successful with regard to their KM and related initiatives.

Background

This project resulted from an observed need related to knowledge management (KM) in knowledge-intensive business services (KIBS) small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). For many years, the university partners have been examining or cooperating with KIBS SMEs (smaller firms), especially in the field of KM, and they noticed gaps in this area. KIBS SMEs should manage their knowledge very well as they base their operations (their competitive advantage) on it. However, when examined, they often reported problems with the actual practice of KM or its implementation. Therefore, the partners behind the project proposal concluded that there is/was a clear need for providing these companies with the necessary skills and competences in KM. This need was identified by all partners regardless of the location on the basis of their studies or cooperation and business contacts with such firms. KIBS firms are an important vehicle of innovation for all other businesses, so proper KM may also contribute to (i) the improvements of other companies in general and with regard to KM and (ii) the whole economy.
