Objectives

A basic aspect of the project is to achieve the communication between students of that age with students from other countries, the same for the teachers. It was a big challenge to achieve that, because we had to find common interests mainly in the learning procedure and not only in their youth interests. A common “language” is that students and teachers of the countries we collaborate protest for the protection of the environment and especially of the sea environment. Another fact is that they are all European citizens and learn about the values of Europe, get familiar with legislation and rights or obligations they have. Another common thing among students of that age and their teachers is the ICT and the STEM projects that they use in the learning procedure. So we achieve the union of next generation European citizens.

Background

Our organisation is a lower secondary school at the level of Junior High Schools, with students at the age of 12 to 15, at the suburbs of Athens. We organise environmental projects with main orientation the respect and protection of the environment. Our project is divided in three parts. The first part has to do with the site of our school. Greece is a Mediterranean country, and our town is next both to the sea and to Athens the capital of Greece. Our project is called: «Discovering Mediterranean Sea’s Green and Blue values». BLUE stands for the protection of the sea. GREEN stands for sustainability from the past to nowadays. The second part has to do with making simple experiments along with art technics that have to do with STEAM. Students learn maths or science through practise. The third part is to come close to European Union values. Greek students love to learn European languages and take part in projects with other students from other countries, e.g., through eTwinning projects. Students learn that as European Citizens they have rights and obligations. Students learn: to communicate, respect foreign people, respect nature, use technology in the learning procedure.
