Young people tend to experience COVID-19 lockdowns differently concerning their routine, their professional or personal responsibilities even their fears and prospects of their future. Some of them have become indifferent of their everyday life and future; others are more optimistic while many others have expressed their stress through mental breakdowns and psychological instabilities. Therefore, this Youth Exchange, focusing on these young people who have been mentally affected by the pandemic, aimed to raise awareness towards this group of people and role of communities to support them. During the days of the Exchange, the young participants worked together on exploring the impact of the pandemic in young people’s mental health, identify several expressions of these breakdowns and any fears that youngsters have concerning their future in several aspects of their life (socio, educational, professional etc.). Another aspect that was analyzed within the project, is the interconnection between the mental health of the people and the overall well-being of the community. Βest cases and successful stories of campaigns and initiatives in various EU countries for supporting these vulnerable people were shared with the participating group, while they also brainstormed and proposed solutions for mental health problems that people are facing after the lockdowns. Moreover, the project provided the space for people who have experienced sensitive barriers to share personal moments, fears and expectations with their peers. Within the project, a safe space was created were participants felt secure to come out and speak about their trauma or a difficult moment of their life and be vulnerable among other participants. Bearing in mind that inclusiveness is the cornerstone of this project, a special folder was created and was stuck on the wall, where people who did not felt confident in sharing their story in front of everyone but still wanted to share it, could write it down and drop it in the folder for anyone to read. This led to the creation of a positive environment of acceptance and tolerance among the participants, which contributed to the success of the overall project while also strengthen them in being the change they want to see. Through this activity, we were aiming to highlight ways and approaches that people can take advantage to support their peers personally. By highlighting the need for people to be aware of the mental health of their peers for the benefit of their community, we highlighted the need for active participation and engagement to the society. By promoting or generating ideas for campaigns for psychological support at local and national level, we promoted the need for involvement in actions that support the vulnerable and those in need in times of pandemic. Respecting the youth activities framework, the project based its activities on non-formal learning tools and methods that promoted the active engagement of participants during all lifecycle phases while it supported “digital transition” by introducing several digital tools and applications within its activities and beyond. Ultimately, the project by tackling a topic which is related to several youth issues, provided space for reflection and promotion of well-being within communities.
