Objectives

This project was born after a long conversation between the members of the informal group about how media and fake news have an impact on young people's lives. Our modern way of life makes us vulnerable to attention deficiency and, thus, misinformation. The intense rhythms of everyday life, the rapid political and social developments, the resulting uncertainty and intense anxiety, but also the growing sense of alienation and loneliness that characterize modern societies gives foot to various groups and individuals who wish to take advantage of this situation. They make profit by exposing us to selected news via either political, social or economic propaganda. Young people are at a greater risk, as they are in a sensitive phase of personality development and identity, without having yet experienced life in its full, thus being easily “controlled” by the Media. Young people have lost their trust to information generated by traditional and modern day media, feel overwhelmed by the amount of sources and sophisticated techniques used to generate and spread false news, and feel that they are subject to social and political manipulation. They need to take control of their lives and be able to understand what is really happening in the world. To respond to this need, this program has been developed based on the most important needs of young people, whose daily exposure to all sorts of media reshapes their way of thinking, their values and attitudes and makes them vulnerable to manipulation. Being informed is essential to have a better approach to being democratic, informed and critical thinking citizens. Therefore, the main objective of this project is to enable young people to face contemporary challenges of misinformation (e.g., fact-checking, critical thinking, comparing different sources) and to increase their participation in democratic life and become active members of European civil society. The specific objectives we implemented in this project were: - To deepen their understanding of the use of information through the media and make them realise the importance of critically processing this information. - To foster intercultural dialogue for the common exploration of truth, regarding the violation of truth through fake news and propaganda and the associated needs in different countries in Europe. - To initiate a process of reflection on the influence of disinformation on people's lives. - To examine in depth the various forms of news and how they affect our lives on different levels. - To foster a mindset of active participation among young people and trigger a strong commitment to actively participate in the improvement of democratic institutions. - To establish and strengthen cross-border partnerships and future common projects and enhanced their multiplier effect and impact.
