Obj 1 aimed to improve social integration for migrant and refugee learners in rural communities in Granada and Almeria. Our goal was to address the barriers to integration such as racism, sexism, and xenophobia through diversity and inclusion education. We wanted to improve our capacity to provide social integration education for newly arrived migrants. To tackle the challenge of varying Spanish language ability, we learnt to use theatre-based education to teach European values of inclusion and tolerance. Obj 2 aimed to combat isolation and promote ecological transition in rural communities through intergenerational and intercultural education. We aimed to develop our skills in bringing together older rural learners and migrant and refugee learners to respond to local and global challenges such as climate change and the degradation of rural communities. We wanted to gain capacity in cross-cutting themes of migration, climate change, nature connection, and social transformation through climate change education, inclusive and participative methods for community education, and nature connection education and sustainability. Overall, our aim was to build cohesion, reduce isolation, and educate on social and ecological transition.
La Bolina is a migrant-led sustainability association in Andalucía that provides pioneering adult education in social integration, regeneration, and sustainability. We have a network of adult educators, including educators from migrant and refugee backgrounds, who offer training activities in permaculture and agroecology, social development, rural community engagement, and integration and diversity. We work with the local council in El Valle and partner with NGOs to deliver training across Analucia, Spain and internationally. Our focus for this project was intercultural and intergenerational adult education for migrant and refugee learners and their communities, promoting positive integration and diverse, cohesive and sustainable societies. La Bolina provides adult education for older learners in rural communities, migrants and refugees who have fewer opportunities to access formal education institutions, and learners across Spain interested in rural community development and migrant integration. We also create learning exchanges and education activities between these learner profiles to increase intergenerational and intercultural learning opportunities.
