European identity and valuesTeaching and learning of foreign languagesBridging intercultural, intergenerational and social divide

Objectives

Our objectives were: 1-Identify the fractures in our society, study the causes and develop strategies to fight inequality. 2-To take on global citizenship and the SDGs, in terms of reducing inequalities, peace, human rights, conflict prevention and intercultural education. 3-Analysing the value of languages as a means of accessing other ways of organising personal experience and relationships, as a means of strengthening dialogue and reinforcing identity. 4-Expand teacher training in education for sustainable development and global citizenship. We looked in depth at social divides from a historical, philosophical, economic, multilingual and multicultural point of view; causes, origin and consequences. We have studied the barriers imposed by the environment, access to resources, migratory flows and the concept of identity as a whole that is nourished by the contribution of other people, cultures and peoples. Our aim: to promote knowledge and reflection as a source of respect and tolerance in order to achieve a more sustainable society. The fourth objective: to acquire didactic tools to carry out the previous ones.

Background

The IES A. Xelmírez I is one of the oldest schools in our community. It teaches ESO, upper secondary education and training cycles in ordinary and adult education. 70% of our pupils are of urban origin and live in the immediate vicinity of the centre. The remaining 30% live in rural areas and come from neighbouring towns. They come from middle-income families who work mainly in the tertiary sector. They are not difficult students, but they reflect the problems of their life stage and of a rather inbred society: emotional instability, intolerance and suspicion of the unknown. This school has always been committed to internationalisation and openness. Over the years, many European projects have been carried out and Fault lines was born as a continuation of a previous one, which addressed the problem of bullying. We believe in the need to offer an integral education to our pupils, cultivating coexistence, respect for other cultures and other ways of living existence. This year we have also carried out a vocational training Erasmus, 4 exchanges and several trips. We have participated in 3 educational success programmes, 7 innovation projects and three training projects.
