In the initial application we wrote as the only objective the improvement of the English level of our students at ESO (Compulsory Secondary Education) level. After implementing the project we realized that we had set more objectives which were implicit but not written down. The second objective is to reduce the level of absenteeism and school dropout as a direct consequence of a better inclusion of students by improving their foreign language skills. Finally, a third objective has resulted in the creation of material by teachers and new methodologies and classroom management techniques that have been implemented during the 2022-23 and future school years.
The Narcís Monturiol Secondary School is located in the city of Figueras in one of the areas where the population suffers from enormous economic difficulties and a high percentage of gypsy ethnicity. These facts are reflected in a typology of students with a low cultural level and in foreign languages, as well as in a high absenteeism, dropout and school failure. The applicant school is considered a centre of maximum academic complexity by the Catalan government due to the complex situations of the families that make it up. Therefore, this project was proposed in order to respond to these needs and improve the inclusion of disadvantaged students as well as to improve their linguistic skills in a foreign language.
