Objectives

When this project was requested, one of the main objectives was to form a group of people in order to improve the school from an international point of view and at the same time improve teacher’s motivations as well as their teaching practice taking into account our high school reality, as it has already been commented in previous sections. Thus, one of this project's main objectives was to improve teacher’s motivation and at the same time give them the opportunity to widen their knowledge on topics and aspects that are part of the school project. Aspects such as dealing and working with tolerance, and understanding among different cultures living in heterogeneous realities. Everything from an egalitarian, european and integrative perspective. Moreover, improving the teacher’s linguistic competence was also an objective of this project by means of being in contact with other cultures and countries who work differently and exchanging different perspectives is always enriching.

Background

IES Politècnic is a public high school located in the Balearic Islands. It is an institution with very high rates of disadvantaged students, with a percentage of immigrant students of nearly 50%- The percentage of students with specific news in the first cycle is 40% and 20% are recently arrived migrants who have joined the center mid term. For three years, one of the lines of action to improve the integration of our students in the educational system has been to try to implement methodologies that allow more flexible and practical learning structures, which in turn have a direct influence in the academic results. Moreover, that allows values such as cooperation, democracy, multiculturalism, coeducation, etc to be worked on at the same time as the curricular contents. To continue developing this methodological change, the center needs to train and involve more teachers. In this way we can implement project based learning in more groups and according to the new educational law (LOMLOE) and its pedagogical principles.
