Objectives

This project aims to promote internationalization by enhancing quality practices and digitalization in HEIs implementing multilingual programs. By deploying innovative digital tools, we address digital transformation, interconnected higher education systems, and innovative teaching practices. The specific objectives include: (1) Supporting multilingual program coordinators in designing, managing, and evaluating programs, leading to the creation of IO1 (MULTIPROAPP database); (2) Enhancing intercultural and linguistic competencies of lecturers and students through IO2 (Augmented Reality training material); (3) Encouraging home language and cultural learning for exchange students via IO3 (flipbook of policy recommendations); and (4) Disseminating these results to multiple educational stakeholders through diverse channels.

Background

The development of linguistic competence is a key priority of the European Commission, yet more action is needed to enhance multilingualism and cultural understanding. While initiatives like YUFE promote bilingualism, Europe lacks a language flagship program similar to the USA. Given Europe's multilingual foundation, it is crucial to integrate multilingual policies at all levels through evidence-based policymaking to prepare students for global mobility and competitiveness. HEIs play a vital role in this effort, yet there is no consensus on best practices. Many European institutions struggle to develop effective pedagogical approaches, often relying on first-language teaching methods without adaptation. Additionally, many exchange students fail to immerse themselves in the target language and culture, undermining EU language objectives. To address this, program coordinators, teachers, and students require structured support to implement multilingual education. The COVID-19 pandemic further complicated these efforts, making digitalization of multilingual programs essential for overcoming barriers.
