Objectives

The overall objective of the European project ‘Universities for Sustainable Development’ was to accelerate the implementation of the 2030 Agenda by enhancing the transformative role of the institutions that make up the EHEA. To this end, three specific objectives were defined: 1. Promote and facilitate the integration of the SDGs in all areas of university activity. 2. Accompany and guide the digital transformation of HEI’s towards the achievement of the SDGs. 3. Put the knowledge generated by HEIs at the service of the SDGs.

Background

The ‘Universities for Sustainable Development’ project aimed to advance the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by digitizing the implementation of the 2030 Agenda in universities in Spain, Lithuania, and Finland, with results shared across the European Higher Education Area (EHEA). Motivated by the urgent need to address global challenges and the social responsibility of higher education institutions (HEIs), the project sought to bridge digital, institutional, and personnel gaps within the EHEA. HEIs play a crucial role in training future leaders, generating knowledge, and transferring it to society, making their transition to sustainability vital. The project leveraged ICT to promote the 2030 Agenda comprehensively, developing 4.0 management models and facilitating knowledge transfer to support HEIs in their sustainability efforts. This initiative aimed to accelerate progress and create a broader impact across institutions.
