Objectives

- Enhance the understanding and experience of climate change competences through an innovative Short Learning Program for higher education institutions. - Reduce skills mismatches between the curricula of the art & design degrees and the UN Agenda 2030. - Equip art and design teachers and students with open educational resources to boost motivation, opportunity, and ability for sustainability action through art. - Create innovative learning outcomes that ensure student engagement in research, analysis, reflection, and the production process of their artwork. - Design the learning program to showcase the skills students acquire during classes through their extracurricular artwork and community work. - Improve the digital competence of teachers.

Background

The ARDES project created and validated a short learning program (SLP) for higher education, focusing on Art, Design, and Sustainability. It aims to enhance students’ understanding of these topics, integrate this knowledge and associated values into their work, and improve their ability to communicate these subjects to the public. Additionally, the program uses digital tools for interactive engagement to foster a greater commitment to climate change mitigation and sustainability among students. The needs addressed by the project were: - There is a gap between young Europeans' concern about climate change and sustainability and their personal commitment to these issues. - Scientific knowledge alone is insufficient to change attitudes and the arts are particularly powerful in influencing a community’s understanding and experience of sustainability and climate change. - In higher art education, while there are degrees and master's programs related to new media, cultural management, communication, few offer open and innovative, project-based learning that teaches how to integrate design, sustainability, and climate change into artistic expression.
