The OpenDigCompEdu project aimed to complement national initiatives by providing a European perspective to develop a European Digital Education Content Framework and contribute to defining the criteria for a European Digital Skills Certificate (EDSC), key priorities of the EU Digital Education Action Plan 2020. The project developed detailed courses and incorporated micro-credentials to improve and validate educators’ digital competences. The following objectives were successfully achieved: 1) raising awareness of the need for a digital education ecosystem in European schools; 2) devising and validating profiles of digitally competent educators within open education; 3) enhancing the uptake of open education practices, resources, and tools for competence-based teaching; 4) fostering sustainability in education through open education frameworks; 5) improving recognition of digital competences through e-portfolios and MOOCs; 6) introducing micro-credentials and open badges for digital competences; and 7) strengthening collaboration among educators, learners, institutions, universities, and EdTech companies. The project leveraged joint experiences from the diversity of partners, ensuring impactful outcomes.
The OpenDigCompEdu project aimed to enhance the digital competences of school educators in Spain, Romania, Croatia, Greece, and Norway to support the sustainable adoption of online and blended education through open educational technologies and principles. Going open is a transformative process for institutions, educators, and learners, fostering collaboration, transparency, and inclusion. This need remains vital to improving digital readiness, resilience, and capacity to handle crises like COVID-19, as outlined in the European Commission’s Digital Education Action Plan (2021–2027). By accelerating digital transformation, the project equipped educators with blended learning strategies and key competences framed within open education principles. As a result, OpenDigCompEdu has empowered educators to become enablers of change, integrating innovative digital practices with pedagogical values. These educators are at the forefront of open education in their regions, driving innovation and leveraging digital technologies to create inclusive, future-ready learning environments.
