GEN-Europe is the European branch of the Global Ecovillage Network (GEN), a network of grassroots initiatives and civil society organisations that was founded in 1995 with the purpose to support community projects that make an active contribution to environmental protection and the conservation of natural resources through an ecological way of living. Many of our members share their developed skills and best practices in seminars held at their premises, whereby the skills as well as the personal attitudes needed for a societal change toward long-term sustainability are experienced directly and therefore deeply recognised. One of GEN's most important aims is to spread these exemplary solutions to a wider audience worldwide. GEN currently has an NGO and consultative status in the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations (ECOSOC) and is a partner of UNITAR, the United Nations; Institute for Training and Research. Our work focuses on networking, information dissemination and promotion of best practice examples, education and advocacy. GEN Europe has been collaborating and creating programs for young people for over a decade. In this journey, we observe the need to use applicable and effective tools for Social Intelligence. Ecovillages are spaces in which these Social Intelligence tools are developed and practised on a daily basis, counting among the members of the organisation with pioneering experience in areas of participatory governance, collaborative leadership, non-violent communication, and group facilitation. All this in a context of strong involvement towards sustainability and ecology, central issues in Ecovillages around the world. This Project tried to respond to the need for tools in group management: for youth workers and young leaders. The aim was to increase collaboration through practice, for decentralised organisations in different areas of youth projects. This training involved an immersion in a member ecovillage of GEN Europe in Navarra, the sharing of the different skills developed in these different organisations. In this global framework, young people are a group of special relevance since they will be the ones who in the coming years will have to respond to many of the challenges that Climate Change and sustainability pose to society as a whole. Building of knowledge, skills and attitudes on how to combat climate change and increase sustainable development locally, regionally, nationally and both within the European Union and beyond. Ecovillages are green forward-looking environments, which promote the development of competences, boost career prospects and engage participants in subject areas, which are strategic for the sustainable growth of our planet, with special attention to rural development. The 2030 agenda, becoming climate neutral by 2050 and the involvement of young people in it is one of the objectives of the Ecovillages, and of this project in particular. We aimed to enhance the international dimension of youth activities and empowerment of youth workers and organisations as support structures for youth in all of the participating organisations. As this training took place in an ecovillage as a learning-centre-by-doing, the dimension of sustainable lifestyles where young people are invited to different activities is key. In the longer term, having carried out this project will contribute to improving the level of key competencies and skills of youth workers and youth, especially skills in Social Intelligence. Ecovillages have shown to be relevant laboratories for the labour market, active citizenship, intercultural dialogue, social inclusion and solidarity, and promoting the entrepreneurial spirit among young people through collaborative projects. This project consisted of a single activity, a training for youth workers and youth leaders involved in various projects with young people in ecovillages and sustainability projects. The central objective of the project was the improvement of skills and abilities in Social Intelligence of youth leaders, workers and volunteers in the field of youth and sustainability. We know that projects with a sustainable lifestyle are generating more and more interest among young people from all over Europe as well as it is one of the priorities of the Erasmus programme to include projects related to environment and climate change. Within the European Green Deal Communication frame, Ecovillages play a significant role of being a source of knowledge and their importance and demands of its experience and expertise keeps increasing. So our challenge is to improve, expand programs, train new youth leaders and increase the capacity for self-organisation of youth groups in order to meet this demand. We consider it very important to support young people in their learning journey, equip them with the necessary tools and methods.
