Objectives

After organizing online meetings and workshops with other young people to discuss about their plans and aspirations for a prospective youth exchange, a consensus arose about focusing on topics that are close to young people’s everyday lives, but still relevant on a bigger scale - nationwide, Europe-wide and worldwide. The project aimed to explore the concrete impact of these topics in young people’s everyday lives and encourage intersectional and intercultural dialogue about these topics. At the beginning of 2021, the hot topics in young people’s lives were coronavirus and related social isolation measures, climate change, and the environment. The name of the youth exchange, Switch – Crossroad of Change, described the hoped end of COVID-19 related social-isolation measures but also aimed to critically evaluate the current lifestyle of humankind, especially in relation to the environment. Issues related to diversity were also discussed during the project. The exchange aimed to involve the local people by educating them through a mutual discussion or practical action, such as collecting trash from the public or helping out the local community. No final form of action was decided at the planning stage as yet, however. Following the objectives of the participating organizations, the exchange aimed to provide a platform for the participants to share and learn from each other’s experiences, and promote intersectional and intercultural dialogue to improve understanding of other people and the surrounding world. Overall, these themes were to be addressed through non-formal learning practices which have already been used for a long time by both participating organizations and their camp/team leaders. The exchange also aimed to encourage young people to get involved in social and political discussions and debates without teaching any prevailing opinions about the topics. Through the experiences in the camp, it was also hoped that participants would develop an interest in EU politics, migration politics, and climate politics, and gain more knowledge related to technology, climate/nature, and ongoing political topics. Besides that, the exchange also aimed to facilitate the growth of an international community, which would stay in touch even after the camp. Participating organizations, Protu and Juhu, have already been involved in building long-lasting international friendships in their previous projects.
