Objectives

Our target group was initially students who followed English language classes in vocational college. The objective was to enrich students’ education with an international perspective, grow experience and learn about do’s and don’ts and foster meaningful communication among students and teachers without need of travelling. The participants had possibility to learn about each other’s cultures and different professional topics while practicing their English skills. Also teachers had a great opportunity to network and collaborate virtually. Communication between the English teachers and Steering group members was active, effective and constructive.

Background

International competence has become a significant factor in practically all fields, since each of us encounters people from other cultures and with different language skills in our daily lives. Not all students have the opportunity to travel abroad, so other teaching methods and operating models are needed to increase students' language and cultural awareness and skills. During the Covid 19 period students and teachers became more experienced in using online and blended learning opportunities. With the Internationalisation@Home project (Globe@Home) we wanted to use this expertise to give students an international experience, without going abroad. Globe@Home gave us an opportunity to pilot virtual lessons/classes between three vocational colleges. Enhancing international competence without the requirement of traveling is also a sustainable and ecological option.
