Objectives

The goal of the Susfood Digree project was therefore to develop an international and multilingual training programme to foster sustainability in the food industry among a wide range of stakeholders with the aim of helping to create a more sustainable future for the food industry. In addition to student training, the digital training tools could also be used in professional training, both directly in companies and in further training institutions for adults. The desired effect was the firm implementation of the sustainability idea in corporate philosophy, business models and investment decisions. When used in student training, the digital training tools could provide future leaders in the food industry with both ecological understanding and, with concrete examples, demonstrate technological and economic alternatives to conventional food production and products. The project objectives were: • Supporting stakeholders in the food industry to enhance awareness for environmental issues • Increasing food industry stakeholder skills & knowledge • Create and use digital open access learning material about sustainability • Spreading the EU Green Deal aims into the food industry

Background

The food industry is one of the most important industrial sector in EU and globally. Food industry is also one of the most impacting sector accounting for more than one third of the global greenhouse gas emissions. The European Commission therefore developed the Food 2030 innovation policy to transform food systems and achieve a resilient food system that is fit for the future including many goals such as food system supporting a healthy planet and circularity and resource efficiency. To tackle the challenges of these goals, new methodologies have to be implemented. All of these challenges demand an advanced education and training of stakeholders in the food industry. In the frame of this context, we applied for the Susfood project to develop digital training courses on sustainability in the food industry to provide teachers, trainers and students some basics and reliable training materials to implement those topics into training curriculum and this way fostering knowledge and skills for global sustainability education in the food industry.
