Objectives

This project was conceived in acknowledgement of the digital age we now live in and the fact that our youth are thus now indeed digital natives. With this new context, youth are exposed to different sources of influence which comes with its own challenges. Moreover, this context means that the youth also have different viewpoints of the media [and the different types of media] as figures of authority, as beacons of credibility, means of entertainment. Also, bearing in mind that perspectives of the media are shaped by our environment, this Youth Exchange (YE) project was conceived with a high intercultural component in order (1) to empower the youth by helping them to develop critical thinking and analytical skills vis-à-vis media; and (2) to examine the influence of the culture, mentality and the history of their country on the young generation and their capacity of analysing, reflecting and thinking critically about information from sourced from the media, in order to make well informed life decisions. Lastly, this YE was also created was a way of establishing and strengthening collaboration with the organisations involved, to create new avenues for projects and, thus to improve the quality of youth work and non-formal education. Micro-level objectives of the project were as follows: - To develop skills of analysing articles from mass-media to reduce manipulation by the media. - To raise awareness among young people about the necessity of source- and fact-checking. - To boost young people’s confidence in sharing their ideas aloud. - To raise confidence to create own blog/vlog/media portal. - To promote and increase the level of tolerance and appreciation for diversity in all its forms: culture, opinions, life choices and so on.
