Objectives

The Erasmus Heritage Volunteers and Leaders III project was proposed by REMPART and 11 European partners (10 countries). It took place in France in the summers of 2022 and 2023, on 6 heritage sites belonging to member associations of REMPART - Union of popular education associations for the preservation of heritage. The project was conceived in response to a collective observation: heritage is often perceived as a domain for experts, which creates a distance between citizens and those who protect it. The aim of the project was to demonstrate that, on the contrary, heritage is everyone's business, and that everyone can have access to it. This project follows on from two initial programmes, Erasmus Heritage Volunteers and Leaders I and II, which REMPART and its partners have been running since 2018 to address the same issues. Strand II of the programme, heavily impacted by the Covid19 pandemic, extended until 2022, a summer which therefore saw both E+HVL 2, and E+HVL3 actions. As the first two strands demonstrated a strong impact on the young participants, the host associations, our partners and our local communities, this third strand sought to continue facilitating mobility towards heritage, which remains a structuring support for exchanges and Europe. This project involved 126 young Europeans in seven youth exchanges. Each exchange involved three to four national groups and took place on a site run by a REMPART association. Each action of the Erasmus Heritage Volunteers and Leaders III project was designed around technical workshops contributing to the progress of the enhancement project of the initial host site and collective exchanges around heritage and culture thanks to practical activities, site visits, collective life and dedicated times. The aim of the exchanges was to offer participants a privileged contact with heritage and an experience of sharing: the project was designed so that young people, whatever their background, could experience in practice commitment, living together and their European citizenship, and discover European heritage, its history and its professions. Erasmus Heritage Volunteers and Leaders III is an inclusive European popular education project, where everyone has a role to play for heritage. This project was also intended to strengthen our nascent network of partners active in the fields of youth and volunteering, as well as in the field of cultural heritage.
