The Northern Lights is a french non-governmental organisation founded in 2020. Located in a traditional farm in Saint-Nizier le Bouchoux, it aims to develop regenerative practices and transmit knowledge and know-how to youth and all people who want to be involved in ecological transition. By implementing this project, we wanted to achieve the Sustainable development goals of the EU and to empower youth workers in these relevant sustainable sectors such as permaculture, agroforestry, resiliency, health food etc. This high quality non-formal training helped youth workers in their project with young people. It provided them a solid toolbox of competences and skills in order to help them to find employment and reinforce their mobility all over Europe. Moreover, non-formal learning such as talking-circle, collective intelligence and shared governance and informal exchange enhanced youth workers' self-development. Indeed, it encouraged them in decision making and thus, feel true ambassadors of ecological transition by disseminating the learning outcomes to their peers. By gathered youth workers from various European countries we aimed to reinforce the European feeling, active citizenship and created a strong network of innovative initiatives against global warming. «Unity is strength », we believed that by gathering diversity, we would find local sustainable solutions that could be disseminated nationally and transnationally. The goal was to support young people to follow their intuitive learning path and deepen their knowledge in their topic of interest and to strengthen the community of eco-projects throughout all Europe. In line with our values of democratic and inclusive society, we included people with fewer opportunities to demonstrate that everyone is unique and had an equal place in society no matter what they are facing. This training wanted to implement a small local new lifestyle more resilient, equal and sustainable. The organisation’s farmland functions as an experimental research site that combines and integrates different design systems and approaches, such as permaculture design [Bill Mollison, David Holmgren], keyline design [Yeomans], Regrarians platform [Darren Doherty] and the work on soil from Elaine Ingham, on agroforestry systems [Syntropic agriculture of Ernst Götsch, Dave Jacky and Eric Toensmeier, Marc Shepard], Holistic Management [Alan Savory]. The transition of the farm was advised and co-designed by Giuseppe Sannicandro and Chan Sac Balam renowned permaculture tutors and designers. 'Perm être' Erasmus+ Youth Worker Mobility (KA153) was the first Professional Development Activity that the organisation has implemented. The topic of the activity was : Permaculture, regenerative agriculture and regenerative hydrology, adapted to youth work practice. The main objective of this residential activity was to promote the acquisition of practical skills and theoretical knowledge in the fields of: permaculture, agroforestry, food ethics, soil biology and self-sufficiency in order to increase participants' personal competencies and professional opportunities in designing sustainable systems and communities.
